Much of Ljubljana’s visual identity comes from architect Jože Plečnik, whose transformation of the city included bridges, markets, river embankments, streets and public spaces. Selected Plečnik works in Ljubljana were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2021.

1. Ljubljana Castle
Rising above the Old Town, Ljubljana Castle has guarded the city for more than 900 years. From its hilltop position, visitors can look across the capital and, in clear weather, toward the Alps beyond.
2. Prešeren Square & Triple Bridge
Prešeren Square is the social heart of Ljubljana. From here, Plečnik’s celebrated Triple Bridge crosses the Ljubljanica and leads directly into the historic centre and Central Market. The two pedestrian side bridges were added to the original stone bridge between 1929 and 1932.
3. Central Market & Ljubljanica
Plečnik’s riverside market colonnades follow the curve of the Ljubljanica and remain part of everyday city life. Nearby embankments are lined with terraces and cafés, making the river as much a social space as a landmark.
4. Dragon Bridge & Old Town
Continue through the historic centre toward Dragon Bridge, one of Ljubljana’s most recognizable landmarks, before wandering the Baroque streets around Town Square, St. Nicholas Cathedral and the riverfront.
